Congratulations to Alaska Lady Hoops first day of competition at the Az Elite Basketball Tournament. Here are a few highlights from today: (Team 3 will be updated after their second tournament game)
DAY ONE RESULTS TEAM 1:
Alaska Lady Hoops v. Arizona Thunder
Final Score: AK Lady Hoops 52 AZ Thunder 23
High Scorers: Deandra Adsitt 18 Jenna Johnson 12
The Alaska Lady Hoops Team 1 got off to a great start in the Arizona Elite Tournament that started today in Phoenix, with a double figure win over the Arizona Thunder team. The Alaska ballers were in control of the game right from the tip, and never looked back. Their tenacious defense, and unselfish offensive play quickly earned them a lead in the game that they never relinquished. By the time the game was over multiple players had scored, with Jenna Johnson and Deandra Adsitt leading the way with 12 and 18. It was a great way to start the tournament, and a good showing of Alaska talent in front of the 30 or more college coaches who were present in the stands to watch the dual courts.
Alaska Lady Hoops 1 v. Vegas Elite
Final Score: AK Lady Hoops 40 Vegas Elite 47
High Scorers: Deandra Adsitt 10 Jenna Johnson 8
In their second game of the tournament the Alaska Lady Hoops team fell to a very athletic and quick team from Las Vegas. Despite a double-digit Alaska lead in the first 10 minutes of the game the girls from Las Vegas started launching threes, and were only down by 3 by halftime. As the second half of the game started the girls out of Vegas caught up within a few minutes, and eventually took the lead for good. The AK Lady Hoops girls did not give up easily though; they kept it tight by fighting for boards, and taking the ball to the basket. Unfortunately though the Vegas girls finished the game on top, and sent the girls from Alaska to the consolation bracket. Their next game will be tomorrow at 6:30 at the Wells Fargo Arena.
DAY ONE RESULTS TEAM 2:
Alaska Lady Hoops 2 v. West Valley Blue
Final Score: AK Lady Hoops 36 West Valley Blue 40
High Scorers: Alex Brewster 8 Britney Anderson 8
The Alaska girls were evenly matched with the girls from West Valley in this tough game that went down to the wire in front of 30 or more college coaches who showed up to watch the simultaneous Alaska Lady Hoops teams play at the Wells Fargo Arena. A tied game at half time turned into a 10-0 run by the West Valley team, but the girls out of Alaska were not about to give up. Thanks to full court defense by Emily Watze and Kim Wilson, and the clutch free throws by Alex Brewster the Lady Hoopers got within 2 points, but came up short at the final buzzer. Coach T. discussed improving the rebounding and free throw efforts with his team as they started to concentrate on their evening game.
Alaska Lady Hoops 2 v. Arizona Premier
Final Score: AK Lady Hoops 39 Arizona Premier 36
High Scorers: Alyssa Rochan 7 Crystal Blair 9 Sharee Miller 7
The Arizona girls started the game with a 9-2 run, but the 5 non-starters in this game for the Alaska Lady Hoops team responded to the deficit with their own 12-0 run. The first half of the game ended with the Alaska girls up 17 to 16. The second half of the game resembled a seesaw with everyone from the Lady Hoopers contributing to the effort. With less than two minutes remaining in the game, and Team 2 up by 2 points Arizona started to foul. After several foul calls against the Arizona team in their attempt to get the ball back in the final seconds, Team 2 got called for an offensive foul. Only down by 2, the Arizona team was looking to score, but were denied when Heidi Pichler led a fierce defensive attack and drew a 5 second call. Crystal Blair then put the lead to 3 after being fouled, leaving Arizona with a desperation 3-point shot at the buzzer.
